DOCTORAL STUDENTS & HISTORY STUDENTS IN NAWA PROM PROGRAMME

In October, as part of the NAWA PROM programme, the Doctoral School and the Institute of History hosted a group of international researchers - including two doctoral students from the United States and participants from Mexico, Chile, and one student from Spain. As the guests were primarily connected with historical studies, their work focused on archival research in our collections and the exchange of research experiences.

Participants and their research topics:

  • Nicolás Velasco Payán (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) - preparing a thesis on the Kraków Uprising of 1846 as presented in the Spanish press.
  • Claudio Vera (Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile) - researching Hussite heresies in Central Europe.
  • Stefani Martínez Gómez (National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico) - analysing the collaboration between anthropology and history in uncovering the pre-Columbian past in Mexico, with a comparison to archaeological work in Poland.
  • Dihan Shi (Washington University in St. Louis, USA) - a political scientist with historical interests; conducting research on population movements in Poland as a consequence of the 18th-century partitions.
  • Antonia Januszewicz (University of Notre Dame, USA) - the only participant from outside the humanities; specialises in cybersecurity. Besides conducting library research, she also visited the Faculty of Science & Technology to learn about our infrastructure and gave a presentation to humanities students about the history and functioning of her Catholic university.

All participants carried out archival research in our library and prepared short presentations about their home institutions and current research projects, thereby enriching the academic life of our community.

The visit was supervised by prof. Hanna Kaczmarek, Vice-Director of the Doctoral School, and dr Bartosz Stuła from the Institute of History, with additional support from an Iberian Studies student Joanna Kretkowska.

In November and December, we are expecting more PROM scholarship holders. Their visits confirm that internationalisation is important to our entire academic community - and in this case, to the development of historical research, which as a discipline often requires stepping beyond local frameworks and perspectives.
