120 MINUTES OF POSITIVE ENERGY & THOUGHTFUL REFLECTION: 2. SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR “SCIENCE–EDUCATION–POP CULTURE”
The Department of Pedagogy of Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, in cooperation with the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Institute of Literary Studies, and the Faculty of Humanities, organised for the second time an interdisciplinary academic meeting titled “Canon-Pop Culture-Cross Out What’s Unnecessary.” The event took place on October 21, 2025, at the Museum of Coins and Medals of John Paul II in Czestochowa under the honorary patronage of Professor Bogusław Przywora, Acting Rector of Jan Dlugosz University and Vice-Rector for Research.
The seminar brought together nearly two hundred participants - students, university lecturers, educators, and representatives of the cultural community.
The lecture by cultural anthropologist Professor Waldemar Kuligowski offered participants a chance to view pop culture not merely as entertainment but as a realm of values and self-experience. Meanwhile, Professor Adam Regiewicz’s presentation on the relationship between avant-garde, counterculture, and the canon demonstrated how these seemingly opposing trends can intertwine creatively in both teaching and educational practice at all levels.
The discussion that followed - moderated by dr Tomasz Florczyk - linked academic reflection on education with an openness to the needs of people shaped by the influence of modern media.
The seminar’s structure and coordination were handled by dr Anna Warzocha, prof. Monika Adamska-Staroń, and prof. Małgorzata Piasecka.
The atmosphere and spirit of the event were best captured by Professor Waldemar Kuligowski, who shared his impressions on social media:
I thought: a seminar - a cramped room, creaky floor, a few reluctant students, tired lecturers. And a dean who says at the start, ‘I must leave you now, other duties call.’ But instead - a modern multimedia hall with a stage and quiet flooring, nearly two hundred people in attendance, an active teaching group, and the rector, vice-rector, and deans sitting in the front row till the very end... That’s how they do it at Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa.
It began with my lecture ‘Pop Culture: An Anthropological Profession of Faith,’ followed by Adam Regiewicz showing how to successfully connect avant-garde and counterculture with the canon, and then an open discussion wisely guided by Tomasz Florczyk. 120 minutes full of kindness, energy, and important thoughts.
Heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to the organisers - Anna Warzocha, Małgorzata Piasecka, and Monika Adamska-Staroń - for achieving such spectacular results. Others could learn from you - truly!
