NEW VICE-RECTOR FOR COLLEGIUM MEDICUM
On July 29, the acting Rector, Vice-Rector for Research, prof. Bogusław Przywora, appointed prof. Joanna Socha to the position of Vice-Rector for the Dr Wladyslaw Bieganski Collegium Medicum. Prof. Joanna Socha will be responsible for the strategic directions of the development of the Collegium Medicum, supervision over the quality of education and support for scientific and clinical activities in the field of medical sciences.
We congratulate Professor Socha on taking up her new position and wish her good luck in implementing her ambitious plans for the development of the Dr W. Bieganski Collegium Medicum.
Vice-Rector’s profile:
Joanna Socha, MD, PhD, is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical University of Silesia, a specialist in radiation oncology. In 2013, she obtained a PhD degree in medical sciences at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology in Warsaw (currently: Maria Skłodowska-Curie National Institute of Oncology – National Research Institute, Warsaw Branch), and in 2023 a postdoctoral degree in medical sciences and health sciences at the Military Institute of Medicine – National Research Institute in Warsaw. In 2024, she completed the prestigious postgraduate studies "Poland Clinical Scholars Research Training Program 2023-2024" at Harvard Medical School Postgraduate Medical Education, organised by the Medical Research Agency.
From the beginning of her professional career, prof. Socha has been associated with the Department of Radiotherapy of the Provincial Specialist Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Czestochowa. The main part of her clinical, scientific and didactic activity focuses on the issue of determining target volumes in radiotherapy, i.e. precise definition of areas that must be covered by the therapeutic dose of radiation. Her second main area of interest is radiotherapy of gastrointestinal, lung and breast cancers.
Prof. Socha is an active lecturer and researcher with many years of experience in teaching postgraduate and specialist courses. She is the author, co-author and co-editor of several monographs in the field of radiation oncology and clinical oncology, including national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. She is a member of the ESTRO Lower GI Focus Group, where she also sits on the Guidelines Committee. Prof. Socha is also an active member and representative in Poland of the International Multidisciplinary Anal Cancer Consortium (IMACC).
