Food certification system with special nutritional value with nutrient profile in – first in EU

A group of researchers from 7 scientific institutions (Medical University of Lodz, Jagiellonian University, Medical University of Gdańsk, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław, Gdańsk University of Technology, Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa), under the supervision of Prof. Danuta Kołożyn-Krajewska, has been working for many months on developing a comprehensive certification system for food products of special value 'F-FOOD'. The system introduces a nutrient profile with three scopes, as postulated by the European Parliament:

- a favourable nutrient profile, which defines minimum levels of vitamins, minerals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, dietary fibre and protein. The criterion for access to the F-FOOD System is based on the requirement to have at least one nutrition claim for the above ingredients;

- an unfavourable nutrient profile, which defines the maximum sugar, salt, fat contents, and even reduces them to zero in some categories, as in the case of trans fatty acids, alcohol and simple sugars. In addition, a number of food additives, dyes and flavors have not been approved;

- an unfavorable profile of technological processes, which eliminates highly processed products created with the use of advanced technological processes

The researchers have established a special purpose partnership: the Research Centre on Functional Foods, which has developed the European Union certification mark "F-Food" for foods with special nutritional value. This is the first such a system in the European Union! Foodstuffs that obtain the F-Food Mark certificate will be able to be marked on the front of the packaging with the System's logo for a period of up to 2 years. The logo is in the form of a graphic sign. The F-Food Logo and Trademark Terms and Conditions are registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

At Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, the academics of the Centre for Innovation and Research of Health-Promoting Food (InnoFood) will be responsible for the certification process:

- a person substantively responsible for the functioning of the Functional Food Laboratory and for contact with the CBZF – dr Kamila Kapuśniak,

- persons responsible for the product registration process: dr Kamila Kapuśniak, mgt Malwina Wójcik,

- persons as experts - prof. dr hab. Danuta Kołożyn-Krajewska, dr hab. Renata Barczyńska-Felusiak, prof. UJD
